How do you prevent yourself from catching Lyme Disease?

Lyme Disease is a bacterial infection transmitted to humans via the bite of
an infected tick. Ticks are small spider-like creatures that can be found in areas of long grass, moorland, heathland and woods.
Not all ticks cause Lyme Disease but it is important to prevent being bitten and ensure any ticks are removed as soon as possible.
Early symptoms of Lyme disease can appear similar to flu (high temperature, muscle and joint pain, tiredness, headaches) and it is often associated with a circular 'bullseye' skin rash at the site of the bite. This rash may not develop immediately and not everyone with Lyme Disease gets the rash.
Later symptoms can often overlap with other conditions such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, M.E., Fibromyalgia as well as Depression and Anxiety disorders.
The best protection when outdoors is to wear long clothing and keep socks tucked into trousers so ticks can't come in contact with the skin.
Light coloured clothing will mean ticks are easier to see and can be brushed off.
Stick to paths where possible and do regular checks for ticks on clothing.
Shower and check yourself, children and pets for ticks when you get home. Especially look at the back of knees, armpits, groin, waist and around the hairline.
Wear an insect repellent that contains either 30% Citriodiol such as Mosi-guard Natural or 20% picaridin such as Autan Protection Plus.
Remove any embedded ticks as soon as possible using tweezers or a tick removal tool, it is important to get as close to the skin as possible.
